Sovereignty, a 3-year-old colt bred and owned by Godolphin and trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, was named Horse of the Year at the 2025 Eclipse Awards. The son of Into Mischief dominated the North American 3-year-old division with a 5-for-6 record, highlighted by wins in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, Fountain of Youth Stakes, and Jim Dandy Stakes. Sovereignty’s victory in the Kentucky Derby marked Godolphin’s first win in the race, and his decision to skip the Preakness was strategic to preserve his form for a longer campaign. His commanding performances, including a 10-length Travers win, secured his Eclipse Award despite not competing against older horses in the latter half of the year.
Trainer Bill Mott earned his fifth Eclipse Award as outstanding trainer, tying him with other legends, while Godolphin continued its streak as outstanding owner and breeder. Sovereignty remains in training with plans for a conservative 2026 campaign targeting the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland. His connections aim for sustained success, potentially making him the first horse since Wise Dan to win back-to-back Horse of the Year titles.
