Sovereignty Favored to Win $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga

Sovereignty, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, is the heavy favorite in the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, a race restricted to 3-year-olds over 1 1/8 miles. The field of five includes notable contenders like Baeza and Sandman, both of whom placed third in various Triple Crown races, and Mo Plex and Hill Road, who have shown promise in graded stakes. Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, boasts four wins in his last five starts and is expected to continue his dominance following his Triple Crown successes.

The Jim Dandy Stakes, named after the 1930 upset winner over Gallant Fox, features a competitive but small field with Sovereignty as the clear top pick at 3-5 odds. While upsets are possible, especially from Baeza and Sandman, most bettors are likely to use Sovereignty as a “free square” in horizontal wagers rather than betting vertically due to his short odds. Overall, Sovereignty is favored to maintain his winning streak in this key prep race.
