Southwest Florida Horse Owners Increase Precautions Amid Texas Equine Herpes Virus Outbreak

Horse trainers and owners in Southwest Florida are taking heightened precautions in response to a deadly equine herpes virus (EHV-1) outbreak in Texas, despite no reported cases in Florida so far. The Florida Department of Agriculture advises increased bio-security measures and close monitoring of horses for symptoms such as hind-end weakness, fever, and nasal discharge. Local equine professionals, including Ashley Kilmer of To Fly Equestrian in Alva, have chosen to skip events and isolate their animals to prevent potential spread.

Several equine organizations in the region are also implementing protective actions, with the Lee County Posse arena closing its grounds indefinitely and the LaBelle Family Livestock Club canceling all upcoming events and practices. Kilmer emphasizes prioritizing the health of the horses, referring to them as partners and athletes, and plans to maintain isolation protocols until the situation becomes clearer.
