Southeast Texas Trail Rides Begin Journeys to 74th Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and rodeo’s iconic trail rides are set to begin this weekend, marking their 74th year. Originating in 1952 with just four men riding from Brenham to Houston, the event has grown significantly, now featuring over 2,000 riders and 102 wagons traveling more than 1,300 miles across 12 different trails. These trail rides culminate at Houston’s Memorial Park, followed by a downtown parade on February 28, ahead of the rodeo’s start on March 2 at NRG Park.

This year’s trail rides include longstanding groups such as the Salt Grass ride, the largest with 1,000 riders, and the Prairie View ride, established in 1975, alongside newer participants like the True Western trail ride. Each group departs from various locations around Houston, covering distances ranging from 60 to over 200 miles. The rides provide a rich tradition of horseback and wagon travel, camping, and community engagement, continuing a beloved cultural celebration in Southeast Texas.
