South West Florida Horse Rescue, founded in 2010 by Tina Garrett and Matt Venaleck, is dedicated to rehabilitating abandoned and neglected horses in Southwest Florida. Operating from a 40-acre property near Babcock Ranch, the rescue works closely with local sheriff’s departments to take in horses seized due to neglect, often arriving in dire conditions. With strong veterinary support and community involvement, the rescue provides medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption services, emphasizing education about the lifelong commitment required to care for horses. They also offer sponsorship programs like the Horse Angel Program to support senior sanctuary horses that remain at the rescue.
To sustain their efforts, the rescue organizes various fundraisers, including charity golf tournaments, quarter auctions, chili cook-offs, and wine tastings, raising significant funds to cover the substantial costs of horse care. Volunteers play a crucial role, with orientation and shadowing programs ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute. The rescue encourages community ownership of their mission, inviting donations and active participation to help save and care for these vulnerable animals.
