The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, a South West equine welfare charity, is celebrating Valentine’s Day by launching “dating profiles” for rescued horses and ponies seeking new companion homes through its Sanctuary at Home rehoming scheme. Inspired by online dating, the profiles highlight each pony’s personality, needs, and ideal environment, aiming to match them with carers who can provide lifelong companionship. This initiative emphasizes that loaning a rescued pony can be as rewarding as purchasing one, while freeing up sanctuary space to rescue more animals in need.
The charity, which cares for nearly 600 equines, ensures every pony undergoes thorough veterinary and behavioral assessments before placement and remains under its lifelong guardianship. Carers provide daily care and companionship, supported by ongoing training and 24/7 emergency assistance from the sanctuary. Research shows that bonding with ponies can improve human wellbeing by reducing stress and loneliness, making these partnerships mutually beneficial. The Mare and Foal Sanctuary relies on donations and legacy gifts and encourages people to explore the profiles and consider offering a loving home to a rescued pony.
