For the first time in over two decades, South Dakota State University’s Horse Unit held a public sale of horses from its herd in May. Located within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences on the Brookings campus, the unit has been recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association as a reputable breeder for 70 years and typically welcomes 10 to 13 foals each spring.
The Horse Unit plays a significant role in the community and university, attracting school tours with over 500 elementary students annually, participating in programs like Horses for Heroes and the Wokini Initiative’s Sunka Wakan, offering horseback riding courses through Brookings Park and Recreation, and serving as a key component of SDSU’s equine studies curriculum.
