The Sonoma County Fair Board has made the difficult decision to cancel horse racing at this year’s fair, following the closure of Golden Gate Fields and the decline in the horse population in Northern California. Most horse owners, trainers, and support workers have relocated to Southern California and other out-of-state race facilities, leading to the cancellation of live horse racing in the Northern Circuit of California.
Live horse racing has been a valued part of the Sonoma County Fair since 1936, but the Board is thankful to all those in the industry who have contributed to its storied history. While the proud heritage of horse racing will be lost for 2025, the Fair’s focus on agriculture, education, exhibits, and entertainment will be enhanced as a result of this change. The Board of Directors will consider bringing horse racing back to the fair in the future if there is a revitalization of the industry and if live horse racing becomes financially and operationally feasible.
The Sonoma County Fair has promised to keep the public informed of any updates regarding the potential return of horse racing to the annual fair. The decision to cancel horse racing was made after much discussion and consideration, and the Board is committed to ensuring that the fair continues to be a successful and enjoyable event for all attendees.
