Sonepur Fair’s Unlikely Celebrities: The 16-Inch Mare and 24-Inch Horse

The Harihar Kshetra Sonepur Animal Fair in Bihar has gained attention this year for featuring an extraordinary pair of tiny horses: the 24-inch-tall horse ‘Badal’ and the 16-inch-tall mare ‘Varsha Rani.’ These miniature horses have become the fair’s most popular attractions, drawing crowds eager to take photos and selfies. Owned by Bhatan Bhagat, who has exhibited at the fair for 28 years, the pair is showcased purely for exhibition and not for sale, captivating visitors with their unusual size amidst the fair’s diverse horse breeds.

In addition to Badal and Varsha Rani, veterinarian Dr. Jitendra Yadav’s horses also stand out, including ‘Lukka,’ a small horse from the Nepal-China border known for performing aerobatics, and ‘Jaanbaaz’ and ‘Cobra,’ the tallest and fastest horses at the fair, respectively. The month-long Sonepur Fair, running from November 9 to December 10, 2025, continues to be a vibrant event featuring a wide variety of animals, but this year, the tiny horses have stolen the spotlight with their charm and uniqueness.
