Smokes Sanctuary: A Retirement Haven for Former Thoroughbred Racehorses

Smokes Sanctuary, located outside Woodstock, is a nonprofit dedicated to providing retired Thoroughbred racehorses a peaceful and safe environment to live out their lives free from the pressures of racing. Founded by Jennifer Wetzel, inspired by rescuing a terrified horse named Tee Shaw from a kill pen, the sanctuary now cares for a herd of former racehorses, offering them wide pastures, companionship, and freedom. Despite being at full capacity, the sanctuary continues to accept horses in need, relying heavily on personal funds and donations to cover essential needs like feed, fencing, and shelter.

The sanctuary also aims to expand its community impact by collaborating with local organizations and offering therapeutic programs for wounded veterans, highlighting the healing power of horses. Wetzel and her partner Kelli Penstock, who share a lifelong passion for horses, emphasize the urgent need for financial support to sustain and grow the sanctuary. Their mission is not only to save horses from the slaughter pipeline but also to provide them with dignity, care, and a chance to thrive in retirement.
