Smokes Sanctuary: A Haven for Retired Thoroughbreds and Healing Hearts

Smokes Sanctuary, located outside Woodstock, is a dedicated retirement haven for former Thoroughbred racehorses, offering them a peaceful life away from the pressures of racing. Founded by Jennifer Wetzel, inspired by rescuing a terrified horse named Tee Shaw from a kill pen, the sanctuary provides wide-open pastures, companionship, and care for horses often at risk of slaughter due to lack of homes. The sanctuary’s herd includes rescued racehorses like Rocky Boy, A Foolish Smile, and Big ‘N Bad, and even a mysterious horse named Angel, with all horses given a chance to live out their lives with dignity and love.

Despite being at full capacity, Smokes Sanctuary continues to accept horses in need but faces ongoing challenges such as funding shortages for essential needs like shelter, fencing, and feed, relying heavily on personal funds and donations. Looking to the future, Wetzel and her partner Kelli Penstock aim to expand the sanctuary’s role by involving local youth and wounded veterans in therapeutic programs with the horses, emphasizing the healing power of these animals. The sanctuary welcomes community support and engagement to sustain and grow its mission of protecting and honoring retired racehorses.
