Smarty Jones Inducted into National Horse Racing Hall of Fame

Smarty Jones, a celebrated Pennsylvania-bred thoroughbred, has been inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. Known for his remarkable run in the 2004 Triple Crown, Smarty Jones is one of seven new inductees and the only one from the contemporary racing category this year. His induction is particularly noteworthy as he becomes only the fourth Pennsylvania-bred horse to receive this honor.

Born on February 28, 2001, Smarty Jones began racing at Philadelphia Park in 2003, under the training of John Servis and with jockey Stewart Elliott. He achieved an impressive record of eight wins in eight races, including victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, before finishing second in the Belmont Stakes. After retiring with a record of 8-1-0, he continues to reside in Pennsylvania, where he stands at stud.

Owner Pat Chapman and trainer John Servis expressed their excitement over the induction, highlighting Smarty Jones as an underdog who inspired many in the racing community. His achievements not only captivated fans but also served as a beacon of hope for small breeders in Pennsylvania. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August 1 at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, NY.
