Slaughter 2 Success: Rescuing and Retraining Horses from Slaughterhouses at Bent Creek Farm

Slaughter 2 Success is a volunteer-run rescue organization based at Bent Creek Farm in Solon, dedicated to saving horses from slaughterhouses, particularly those transported to Mexico and Canada under inhumane conditions. Founded by Andria Pooley, Eva Sileo, and Emily Pelikan, the group rehabilitates and retrains rescued horses using positive reinforcement methods, while also providing euthanasia consultations to help owners make compassionate decisions. Since opening in March 2022, they have rescued and adopted out 28 horses, emphasizing the importance of kind handling and raising public awareness about the cruelty horses face in the slaughter industry.

The rescue operates entirely on volunteer efforts and fundraising, with each horse costing around $5,000 to care for. Despite financial challenges and a decline in donations, the team remains committed to their mission, hosting events like horse shows and tack sales to support their work. The organization also highlights the lack of regulatory oversight in horse slaughter compared to other livestock industries, underscoring the urgency of their advocacy for humane treatment and responsible end-of-life care for horses.
