Six mules and two ponies were rescued from an exposed hillside in south Wales just before Christmas following the death of their owner. The complex operation was coordinated by The Donkey Sanctuary after a request from the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust, involving multiple welfare organizations including The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, Redwings, and World Horse Welfare. A team of nine from The Donkey Sanctuary worked alongside these groups to safely transport the animals using specialist handling pens and provide immediate veterinary and behavioral care.
The rescued equines are now safe and sheltered at Lluest, where they are undergoing assessment and rehabilitation. The Donkey Sanctuary will continue to offer advice and support throughout their recovery. Welfare leaders praised the collaborative effort, highlighting the professionalism and compassion that ensured the animals’ wellbeing during this challenging rescue.
