Sierra Leone, Mindframe Set for Rematch in Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga

The 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Saratoga has emerged as a pivotal prep race for the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar, thanks to its ideal nine-week spacing. This year’s $1 million race features a highly competitive field, including the top four finishers from the Whitney Stakes (G1) and multiple Grade 1 winner Mindframe, trained by Todd Pletcher. Mindframe, who has bested favorite Sierra Leone in previous meetings, is coming off a strong winning streak and is expected to handle the 1 1/4-mile distance well. Sierra Leone, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Eclipse Award champion, also returns in top form under trainer Chad Brown, aiming to use the Gold Cup as a final tune-up.

Other notable contenders include Godolphin’s Highland Falls, who has a strong Saratoga record, and Whitney third-place finisher Disarm. White Abarrio, the 2023 Whitney and Classic winner, and Antiquarian, a consistent performer trained by Pletcher, round out the deep field. The race is shaping up as a thrilling rematch and a critical stepping stone toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic, with trainers and connections viewing the timing and competition as perfect preparation for the season’s biggest event.
