Sherbert, a Shetland pony severely neglected by a Westcountry couple running a so-called rescue center, was among 13 animals rescued in a 2022 multi-agency operation. Found emaciated, covered in lice, with overgrown hooves and heart issues, Sherbert and other animals suffered extreme cruelty and poor living conditions under Sarah and James Baker and their stable hand Darren Laker. The Bakers faced multiple charges of causing unnecessary suffering to horses, donkeys, and a goat, pleading guilty and receiving suspended prison sentences along with lifetime bans on keeping animals. The RSPCA described the case as one of the worst animal neglect incidents they had encountered.
After extensive veterinary care and rehabilitation at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon, Sherbert was rehomed to Christina in South Wales through the charity’s loan scheme, ensuring lifelong security. Despite her traumatic past, Sherbert has thrived in her new home, showing affection and enjoying daily walks and companionship. Unfortunately, another rescued pony, Poppy, did not survive despite the sanctuary’s efforts. The sanctuary emphasizes that rehoming ponies like Sherbert helps them continue rescuing animals in dire welfare situations.
