Shelby County Fair Board Preserves Beloved Summer Classic Horse Show

The Shelby County Horse Show, a staple event for over 35 years marking the final competition before the prestigious World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville, faced uncertainty after the original organizers, the Bennett Family, retired earlier this year. To preserve this important tradition and its coveted dates (July 31-August 2), the Shelby County Fair Board stepped in to take over the event, ensuring it remains in its birthplace. The show is highly valued by the saddlebred community for its timing, convenience, and the opportunity it provides for horses, riders, and trainers to prepare for the championship. The fair board’s experience with similar events like the Dogwood Classic gives confidence in their ability to successfully manage the Summer Classic Horse Show.

The fair board aims to build a strong foundation for the show’s future, expanding it with 35 new classes this year, increasing the total to around 100 classes. The event not only fosters community pride by reinforcing Shelby County’s reputation as the “saddlebred capital of the world” but also significantly benefits the local economy through tourism and business. The Shelby County Summer Classic Horse Show will take place July 31-August 2 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds, continuing a cherished tradition that attracts participants and visitors from across the U.S. and internationally.
