Sheep, Goats, and 4-H Youth Kick Off Deschutes County Fair Opening Day

The Deschutes County Fair kicked off with enthusiastic participation from local youth involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America clubs, who brought a variety of livestock including sheep, goats, chickens, and turkeys. These young competitors spend months raising and caring for their animals, aiming to win blue ribbons based on their knowledge, animal care, and grooming skills. Notable participants include Cloverdale 4-H members like 16-year-old Clover Keyes, who won a blue ribbon for her sheep, and 13-year-old Connor Voelzew from Kidz N Kidz, who earned ribbons for his goats while also helping maintain the barn.

The fair also features smaller animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, with participants like the Rustland sisters emphasizing the importance of disease awareness and treatment. The event highlights the dedication, responsibility, and time management skills these youth develop through their involvement in agriculture and animal science. The Deschutes County Fair continues through Sunday, culminating in an auction where animals are sold.
