Sheep, Goats, and 4-H Mark Opening Day of Deschutes County Fair

The Deschutes County Fair kicked off with hundreds of 4-H and Future Farmers of America youth showcasing their livestock, including sheep, goats, chickens, and turkeys. These young competitors spend months raising and caring for their animals, aiming to win blue ribbons judged on their knowledge, animal care, and grooming. Longtime participants like 16-year-old Clover Keyes and 13-year-old Connor Voelzew highlighted the dedication and responsibility involved, with many families passing down the tradition and values of agricultural education.

In addition to livestock competitions, participants also learn about animal health and disease prevention, as noted by younger members raising smaller animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. The fair, which runs through Sunday, serves as both a community event and an educational experience, culminating in an auction where animals are sold, rewarding the hard work and commitment of these young farmers.
