The grassroots nonprofit Oreli is dedicated to preserving the endangered Polissian horse, a native Ukrainian breed thought extinct since the mid-20th century. Founded to protect the cultural and natural heritage of the Polissia region, Oreli’s project Shcherbati Tsuhli locates, purchases, and breeds these resilient horses, which are uniquely adapted to local forest and swamp ecosystems. The breed holds immense historical and genetic value, linked to Ukraine’s medieval past and traditional landscapes, and plays a vital role in maintaining the region’s ecosystems. Despite Soviet-era policies that nearly eradicated the breed, a few horses survived thanks to local resistance, and Oreli’s efforts have revived the population from just a handful to around 30 horses, with hopes for growth.
The war in Ukraine has forced the Shcherbati Tsuhli stable to become nomadic, relocating horses multiple times to ensure their safety and survival amid conflict and landmines. Despite financial struggles, limited resources, and the challenges of war, the team remains committed to restoring the breed to at least 100 horses to secure official recognition and genetic preservation. The project also fosters cultural revival through tourism, a museum, and traditional crafts, emphasizing that saving the Polissian horse is crucial not only for biodiversity but for preserving Ukrainian identity and heritage. Support from donors and volunteers is vital to keep the horses alive and continue this unique conservation effort.
