The Government of Saskatchewan has introduced The Response to Illicit Drugs Act to strengthen accountability for drug traffickers and improve community safety. This new legislation enables the province and individuals harmed by illicit drug activities to pursue civil actions to recover costs related to drug production and trafficking, specifically targeting Schedule I substances under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, while excluding simple possession. Additionally, the act allows the government to void certain appointments or agreements if the involved parties are convicted of serious drug offenses.
This act complements Saskatchewan’s broader public safety and addiction recovery strategy, supported by a record $624 million budget for mental health and addiction services in 2025-26. The province is also expanding treatment capacity by adding 500 new addiction treatment spaces, with nearly 300 already operational, demonstrating a dual focus on enforcement and support for individuals living with addictions.
