Alcester para dressage rider Sara Bates achieved a remarkable silver medal at the prestigious CHI Al Shaqab competition in Doha, Qatar, riding her 17-year-old home-bred mare Tango. Competing in the Grade IV category for Great Britain, Bates delivered an emotional and standout Freestyle performance to music from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, scoring 68.792% and finishing second to the world number one, Kate Shoemaker. This podium finish marked a strong start to her international season, earning valuable world ranking points and highlighting her resilience in managing multiple sclerosis alongside elite sport.
Bates praised the supportive and respectful atmosphere of the competition and acknowledged the crucial backing from her sponsor, Allens Caravans, which helped fund her campaign. She also emphasized the benefits of the warm climate on her condition and spoke openly about the need for greater investment in British para dressage. Looking ahead, Bates plans to continue competing both domestically and internationally in 2026, using her platform to raise awareness of hidden disabilities and inspire others to pursue their dreams despite challenges.
