Alcester para-dressage rider Sara Bates is set to compete at the prestigious CHI Al Shaqab competition in Doha, marking a significant milestone after more than a decade of determination following her 2012 multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Initially competing in able-bodied events, Bates transitioned to para-dressage in 2017 and has steadily risen to become a Grade IV rider ranked 13th globally. Supported by her home-bred mare Tango and mentorship from Paralympic champion Sir Lee Pearson, Bates balances rigorous training with managing MS symptoms like fatigue and spasms, relying on specialist adaptations to compete at the highest level.
Despite her international success, Bates remains self-funded, with sponsorship from Allens Caravans enabling her participation in Doha. She emphasizes the need for greater recognition of para-sport and the importance of perseverance, noting that disability does not diminish ambition. Looking ahead, Bates aims to break into the world top 10 rankings, inspired by the support of her family and the belief that hard work and positivity can lead to extraordinary achievements, regardless of age or circumstance.
