Santa Ragione’s horror game HORSES, despite being banned from major platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store, sold over 18,000 copies in two weeks, generating about $65,000 in net revenue. This income allowed the studio to repay development loans and royalties but was insufficient to fund future projects, forcing the team to seek other work and delaying any potential reunification. The developer criticized the lack of transparency and accountability from distribution platforms, highlighting the broader issue of unclear bans and reviews affecting many games.
HORSES places players on a secluded horse farm where the “horses” are actually enslaved humans wearing horse masks, challenging players to navigate obedience and restraint over a 14-day period. Despite its controversy and removal from major stores, the game remains available on alternative platforms like GOG, itch.io, and the Humble Store.
