The Have a Heart Equine Sanctuary in McGregor, South Africa, which has provided refuge for nearly nine years to horses, donkeys, and other animals rescued from abuse and neglect, is facing eviction for the second time in a year. Authorities have declared the sanctuary’s land environmentally protected due to rare plants, prohibiting grazing and making it impossible to sustain the animals there. Among the 60 horses and nine donkeys are several blind and special-needs rescues who require stability and care, heightening the urgency of their relocation.
Fortunately, a new sanctuary has been secured near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, offering open grazing, reliable water, and sustainable income opportunities to support ongoing animal care. However, transporting the animals and their equipment over a 10-hour journey will cost approximately $15,400 (£11,500), a significant financial challenge. The sanctuary and its supporters are appealing for donations to cover transport costs and ensure the safe relocation of these vulnerable animals to their permanent home.
