San Juan County leaders are concerned about the potential relocation of SunRay Park and Casino, the only horse track and casino in the Four Corners region, to Clovis. The president of SunRay Park, Paul Blanchard, supports the move, citing declining betting activity and the opportunity for a larger, 200-acre site near Clovis that could enhance horse racing in New Mexico. However, local officials worry about the significant economic impact, including the loss of 120 jobs and the effect on families in San Juan County.
The New Mexico Racing Commission has reviewed the proposal and is supportive, noting that the Clovis location lacks nearby tribal casinos, which currently compete with SunRay Park in Farmington. The commission believes the move could increase purse money, race days, and overall industry growth. If approved, racing at the new Clovis track could begin in spring 2027. The public has 45 days to submit comments before a final decision is made.
