Saint Aelred’s Pilgrim Trail Launches New 50-Mile Circular Horse Riders’ Route at Rievaulx Abbey

The Saint Aelred’s Pilgrim Trail has launched a new 50-mile circular Horse Riders’ Route in partnership with the Ryedale Bridleways Group and supported by the British Horse Society. The trail, celebrated with a launch event at Rievaulx Abbey, offers a scenic journey through the North York Moors, linking historic churches and landmarks such as Rievaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey. The route was carefully planned and mapped, culminating in the publication of a beautifully illustrated Horse Riders’ Guidebook.

The launch event featured 22 riders setting off from Old Byland, accompanied by walkers and re-enactors in medieval costumes, creating a festive atmosphere. Peter Wright, star of Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet, officially opened the trail by cutting the ribbon amid cheers from supporters and volunteers. The celebration concluded with refreshments at the Abbey Café and acknowledgments to English Heritage staff for hosting the event, marking a significant milestone for the Saint Aelred’s Pilgrim Trail community.
