Russell Eugene Westlake, born in Bozeman, Montana in 1948, was a lifelong Montana cowboy known for his humor, love of horses, and community service. Raised on a family farm, he was deeply involved in 4-H for decades and served six years in the Montana National Guard. Russell married Sheryl Johnson in 1968, with whom he raised three children on their farm. He owned a trucking company, raced quarter horses, and was active in outdoor pursuits and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Posse. Winters spent in Arizona saw him embrace cycling and build friendships across North America.
Russell passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2025, survived by his wife, children, six grandchildren, sister, and his beloved horse Kitty. A graveside service and social gathering are planned in Bozeman. Memorial contributions are suggested for Montana State University rodeo Team, Benefis Peace Hospice, or Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, honoring his lifelong passions and community spirit.
