On October 8, a newly acquired, unnamed 10-year-old gelding from City Island Stables made an unexpected solo journey from the Bronx into Pelham Manor, escaping his stall and navigating busy roads and trails before being safely recaptured. The horse, recently purchased at an auction in Pennsylvania and still adjusting to his new environment, wandered through local golf courses and residential areas, prompting police and residents to assist in his recovery. Barn manager Nelson Martinez eventually secured the horse, who was then transported back to the stable and placed in a secure stall.
stable owner Marcy Brennan, who was away during the incident, later reflected on the horse’s spirited nature, noting that he was heavy on “go” rather than “whoa.” Despite the initial escape, the horse—now named Alcatraz—has since settled in well after several rides. Brennan, with deep roots in the local equestrian community, emphasized the uncertainty often involved in buying horses at auction but expressed confidence that Alcatraz is now fitting comfortably into his new role.
