Ruidoso Downs Racetrack Suspends Operations Amid Flood and Fire Damage, Impacting Local Economy

Ruidoso Downs Racetrack, a major contributor to the local economy generating up to $180 million annually and attracting around 3,500 daily visitors, will not be returning to Ruidoso for the foreseeable future. The racetrack has suffered extensive damage from a series of extreme weather events, including the Salt and Southfork wildfires and historic flooding in 2024 and 2025, which destroyed horse stables and left the track in disarray. Despite reopening briefly after a 10-month closure, ongoing flood risks have forced officials to relocate all racing events to Albuquerque while flood mitigation efforts are planned.

Local authorities and racetrack officials are engaged in discussions to address the flood issues, but the estimated cost of mitigation projects is around $200 million, making a quick return unlikely. The loss of the racetrack poses a significant economic challenge for Ruidoso, potentially creating a $180 million gap in the community’s economy. Although local businesses remain active, there is cautious hope that the racetrack may eventually return once the necessary infrastructure improvements are made.
