The RSPCA is urging firework event organisers to adopt quieter, more animal-friendly displays to reduce distress and harm to pets and wildlife. The charity highlights incidents such as a horse severely injured and a dog killed after being spooked by fireworks, emphasizing that loud noises and bright flashes can cause panic, injury, and lasting trauma in animals. They are campaigning for legislation changes including limiting firework sales to licensed venues, restricting the number of days fireworks can be used, reducing noise levels, and mandating clear packaging warnings about animal distress.
Local councils like BANES have supported these measures by encouraging quieter displays and consideration for animals. The RSPCA is also partnering with Classic FM for Pet Classics, a radio program designed to help pets and owners relax during fireworks season. With 66% of pet owners expressing concern over backyard fireworks, the charity is calling on the public to support their petition and contact MPs to push for these changes.
