RSPCA Urges Adoption to Free Up Space Amid Record Number of Dogs in Care

The RSPCA Block Fen Animal Centre in Wimblington, Cambridgeshire, is facing an unprecedented influx of dogs needing rehoming, with a record 1,646 dogs in care across England and Wales as of July. The centre has been overwhelmed by large-scale cruelty cases, resulting in hundreds of additional dogs requiring shelter. Due to full capacity at rescue centres, many dogs are temporarily housed in private boarding facilities, costing the charity around £650,000 monthly. Some dogs, especially those from traumatic backgrounds, need special, dedicated homes where owners can invest time in training and building trust, leading to longer stays at the centre and reduced space for new arrivals.

The centre’s longest resident, a two-year-old Cane Corso crossbreed named Dray, exemplifies the type of dog needing extra care and patience. The RSPCA is urging the public to consider adoption to free up vital space and is committed to supporting prospective owners throughout the process. Staff emphasize the rewarding experience of seeing animals transition to loving new homes, highlighting the urgent need for community involvement to help manage the growing demand for animal rescue and care.
