The RSPCA has seized over 100 animals from a property in Morgan, South Australia, linked to the South Australian Humane Animal Rescue Association (SAHARA), after allegations of severe animal mistreatment between September 2024 and February 2025. Founders Carole Morris and Shane Jones face 41 counts of animal ill-treatment and three counts of failing to comply with animal welfare notices. The seized animals included horses, dogs, cattle, chickens, a camel, and a goat, many of which were found in severely emaciated conditions or suffering from serious health issues, leading to some being humanely euthanized by the RSPCA.
Following court proceedings, Morris and Jones agreed to the forfeiture of the animals to the RSPCA, which will prioritize their rehoming. The case highlights serious breaches of animal welfare under South Australia’s amended Animal Welfare Act, which imposes penalties of up to $250,000 fines and/or 10 years imprisonment for aggravated cruelty. The pair’s first criminal hearing is scheduled for September, as the investigation continues into the alleged mistreatment at a charity that had received over half a million dollars in donations.
