The RSPCA, supported by seven other animal charities and Nottinghamshire Police, uncovered appalling neglect at Croftfield Farm in Skegby during a November 2023 raid, rescuing 455 animals of 19 species living in filthy, overcrowded, and untreated conditions. The farm owner, Lee Hayes, was sentenced to 12 months in prison and banned from keeping animals for life after pleading guilty to 25 animal welfare offences, while his girlfriend received a suspended sentence and a five-year dog ban. Many animals suffered from severe neglect, including untreated injuries, malnutrition, and unsanitary living environments, with some needing to be euthanized to end their suffering.
The large-scale rescue operation, codenamed Operation Teal, involved extensive veterinary care and rehoming efforts by multiple charities, highlighting the severe failure in basic animal husbandry at the farm. The court ordered Hayes to pay substantial costs to the RSPCA and mandated the rehoming of remaining animals. The case underscores the dangers of hoarding animals without adequate resources or care, with officials emphasizing the importance of early intervention and the devastating impact of prolonged neglect.
