Genesis Green Stud, a nearly 70-year-old family-run operation in Suffolk, is embarking on a new chapter by standing its first stallion, Royal Scotsman, a Group 2 winner recently acquired in partnership by Michael Swinburn and owners Jim and Fitri Hay. The stud, long known for commercial sales success, had no initial plans to stand stallions but seized the opportunity when Royal Scotsman, a well-bred and talented racehorse with a strong pedigree and racing record, became available. Michael Swinburn, son of former champion jockey Wally Swinburn, emphasizes a selective, quality-driven approach to breeding, aiming for longevity and commercial viability rather than volume.
The Swinburn family’s deep roots in racing and breeding enrich the stud’s story, with three generations actively involved and a legacy marked by notable horses like Shergar. Michael acknowledges the challenges facing British breeding, including rising costs post-Brexit and a shrinking foal crop, but remains optimistic about the future, especially with schemes like the Great British Bonus supporting middle to lower-end breeders. He stresses the need for better industry support and fairer economics to sustain breeding as a viable business rather than a hobby. With Royal Scotsman, the family hopes to build a successful stallion career that benefits both breeders and the wider racing community.
