After a 30-year hiatus, the Big Fresno Fairgrounds in Fresno, California, has revived its rodeo events, filling the void left by the cancellation of live horse racing dates in Northern California. The fair, historically known for over 120 years of live horse racing, is now honoring its heritage by hosting rodeo competitions featuring more than 60 participants from across the country competing in events like bronc riding, bull riding, and mutton busting. The rodeo offers a $100,000 purse and has drawn local favorites such as Reed Neely, a top-ranked bronc rider from Clovis.
The return of the rodeo holds special significance for longtime fairgoers like Erick Horiuchi, who dreamed of bringing rodeo back to the fairgrounds since the 1960s. While live horse racing is no longer part of the fair, fans can still engage in betting on races nationwide through the wagering lounge. The rodeo events are scheduled to continue with competitions from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, bringing renewed excitement and tradition to the Fresno Fairgrounds.
