Rockford Therapeutic Riding Center Transforms Lives Through Equine Therapy

The Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding in Algoma Township, Michigan, uses equine-assisted therapy to help hundreds of adults and children with disabilities improve physical strength, balance, and confidence. Clients like Justin DeBoer and David Harrison, both with cerebral palsy, have experienced significant physical and psychological benefits through horseback riding, which offers unique healing opportunities beyond traditional therapy. Executive Director Kathy Ryan highlights how the therapy boosts confidence by allowing riders to feel empowered and calm through their connection with horses.

The center operates 13 programs, including one for veterans addressing service-related injuries, and emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between horse and rider as a powerful tool for healing. Founded on Ryan’s personal experience with her autistic son, the center demonstrates how equine therapy can help clients overcome sensory challenges and improve overall functioning. Volunteers and donors are encouraged to support the center’s mission to transform lives through the healing power of horses.
