Robbie Amell Recalls Learning to Ride for Hawaii Five-0 Role That Ended Up Using a Four-Wheeler Instead

At Entertainment Weekly’s Brave Warriors panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Robbie Amell shared a humorous story about learning horseback riding for a 2012 Hawaii Five-0 role as a polo player. Despite taking lessons and even getting injured during training, Amell ended up filming his horseback scenes on a four-wheeler, with the director opting for a mechanical stand-in rather than a real horse. Amell praised his stunt double for performing the more dangerous riding stunts and reflected on the fun of immersing himself in new skills.

The panel also featured Jamie Roy from Outlander: Blood of My Blood, who discussed his own intensive preparation, including a two-week boot camp to learn horse riding, sword fighting, and a Scottish accent. Roy noted the unique personalities of horses on set and the challenges of working with them, emphasizing the importance of confidence when handling these animals. The event highlighted the actors’ dedication to mastering their roles, even when faced with unexpected obstacles.
