RNLI Rescues 25 People and Finds 10 Missing Children During Hottest Weekend at Barry Island Beaches

During the hottest weekend of the year in Wales on July 12-13, Barry Island’s Whitmore Bay saw thousands flock to the beach, resulting in the busiest period for the RNLI lifeguards. Over two days, six lifeguards rescued 25 people from dangerous currents caused by large spring tides and offshore winds, including a mass rescue of six individuals blown out to sea on inflatables. Additionally, the team located 10 missing children along the seafront, reuniting them with their families amid the crowded conditions.

The RNLI emphasized the importance of beach safety, particularly avoiding inflatables in the sea when offshore winds are present, as indicated by the orange windsock at lifeguarded beaches. Lifeguard supervisor Matt Childs urged visitors to swim between designated flags, keep a close watch on children, and carry a means of communication when engaging in water activities. The successful multi-agency response involving the Coastguard and police ensured all rescues had positive outcomes despite the challenging conditions.
