Rillito Park’s Future: From Horse Racing to Youth Sports Fields?

Rillito Park in Tucson, Arizona, is facing uncertainty regarding its future as a horse racing venue, having missed three consecutive racing seasons. Pima County, which owns the park, does not anticipate horse racing returning for the 2026 season, raising questions about the long-term viability of the racetrack. The park has a rich history of over 80 years of racing, but operational challenges, including failed bids for new track operators, have led to its current state.

Youth sports advocate Ted Schmidt sees an opportunity to repurpose the park for playing fields, emphasizing the demand for soccer and other sports facilities in the area. With over 10,000 children and 5,000 adults participating in organized soccer in Pima County, Schmidt argues that converting the racetrack into sports fields would better serve the community’s needs. He suggests that horse racing could be relocated to other venues, such as the County Fairgrounds or Marana.

Pima County Parks and Recreation Director Victor Pereira acknowledges the county’s commitment to horse racing but is open to exploring alternative sites in the future. Currently, Rillito Park remains the only location for horse racing, and any new operator may have a contract limited to five years, allowing the county to keep its options flexible. The park serves multiple stakeholders, including youth sports, horse racing, and special events, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to its future use.
