Rider’s Accident Sparks New Road Safety Campaign for Horse Riders

Alyson Lock, a horse rider from Suffolk, is leading a new campaign by the animal charity Blue Cross to raise awareness about road safety for horse riders, following a traumatic accident. While riding her horse Mylo, Alyson was injured when a speeding car startled Mylo, causing him to fall into a ditch on top of her. This incident left her with a ruptured hamstring and highlighted the dangers riders face on country roads.

The campaign, supported by TV presenter Ben Fogle, aims to educate both drivers and riders on safe road-sharing practices. Fogle emphasized the importance of awareness to prevent accidents, noting that even well-trained horses can be easily spooked by sudden movements or loud noises. The initiative, titled “Blue Cross Code: helping you and your horse stay safe,” seeks to promote safety measures that can protect both human and animal lives.

Key safety tips from the Blue Cross include wearing high-visibility clothing, using hand signals to communicate with drivers, and being alert to surroundings. Riders are encouraged to observe their horses for signs of stress and to plan their routes carefully, especially during busy holiday traffic. The campaign underscores the need for greater awareness and understanding between drivers and horse riders to reduce the risk of accidents.
