Rideau Carleton Raceway Ends Harness Racing Program After 2026 Season

Rideau Carleton Raceway has announced the end of its harness racing program starting with the 2026 season after extensive discussions with Ontario Racing. Despite significant investments by Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, which operates the venue, in upgrading racing infrastructure, the program was deemed unsustainable due to changing consumer preferences. The decision impacts team members, who are being offered alternative employment and training, while Ontario Racing will support horsepeople in relocating to other Ontario Standardbred racetracks through funding and transitional programs.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, a major entertainment destination in Canada’s capital, continues to operate with a focus on gaming, hospitality, and live events, employing over 1,000 people and contributing significantly to the local community. Ontario Racing, the provincial authority for horse racing, will reallocate funds from Rideau Carleton to support live racing purses elsewhere and assist affected horse owners in transitioning to other tracks, ensuring ongoing support for Ontario’s horse racing industry.
