Ride Utah! Program Offers Therapeutic Trail Rides for Military Veterans

Ride Utah! is an extension program led by USU equine specialist Dr. Karl Hoopes that offers military personnel, both active and retired, a therapeutic trail-riding experience alongside a guest of their choice. The program takes place primarily in northern Utah, utilizing beginner-friendly trails through scenic landscapes. Participants enjoy a two-hour guided horseback ride on carefully evaluated horses, followed by a meal and group discussions that often focus on the challenges of military life and the positive impact horses have on mental well-being.

Dr. Hoopes highlights the program’s benefits, including reduced anxiety, increased positive feelings, and decreased cravings for those with addictions, supported by studies with the VA. Community support is crucial for Ride Utah!, especially financial contributions to cover horse care, transportation, meals, and volunteer expertise. The program relies on donations of horses and community involvement to continue providing this valuable outdoor and healing experience for veterans.
