Rick Pitino Finds Thrill in Horse Racing While Leading St. John’s Basketball to Success

Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino approaches basketball with intense competitiveness, describing it as “life or death,” whereas horse racing serves as a more relaxed and enjoyable hobby for him. Pitino recently experienced the thrill of victory at Saratoga Race Course when his 2-year-old colt, Johnny’s Red Storm, won impressively in its career debut. Owned by Pitino’s RAP Racing stable in partnership with John Cronin Jr., the colt was purchased for $60,000 and earned $44,000 in its maiden turf race. Pitino also owns other young horses, including Zuby, named after his St. John’s basketball captain, though Zuby has yet to show star potential.

Pitino has revitalized the St. John’s basketball program, leading the team to a 31-5 record and their first Big East title in 25 years, fueled by strong recruiting and financial backing from owner Mike Repole. Despite Repole’s wealth and involvement in sports, Pitino has chosen not to partner with him in horse racing, citing budget constraints as a Catholic school coach. Looking ahead, Pitino remains energized and optimistic about his basketball team’s prospects, embracing the excitement of sold-out games and national rankings as he continues his coaching career.
