Richard Blackman Awarded Order of Australia Medal for Decades of Community Service in Coonabarabran

Richard Blackman has been honored with an Order of Australia Medal in recognition of his extensive service to the Coonabarabran community, particularly within the equestrian sphere. Now retired in Mudgee, the 86-year-old has dedicated decades to fostering new riders through his 43 years on the Pony Club committee, promoting eventing via the North West Equestrian Expo since 1992, and contributing 36 years to the Coonabarabran Show committee. He takes pride in helping young riders gain confidence and acknowledges the vital support of his wife and fellow committee members in sustaining these efforts.

Mr. Blackman reflects on the evolution of horse use from practical work to sport and encourages others to engage actively in their communities. He emphasizes the importance of teamwork and passing leadership to younger generations while remaining available to offer guidance. His commitment exemplifies the values celebrated by the Governor-General during the Australia Day awards, highlighting service, community spirit, and care.
