Rescued Horse Joins Saratoga Springs Police Department Mounted Unit

In February, a 22-year-old horse named Sly was dramatically rescued from icy waters in Saratoga Springs, New York, after falling through a frozen pond. The Saratoga Springs Police Department, local fire department, and the horse’s owner worked together to save the 1,300-pound animal, who was then treated for hypothermia at an equine hospital. The rescue was captured on body camera footage, highlighting the quick response that likely saved Sly’s life.

Four months later, Sly has joined the Saratoga Springs Police Department’s mounted unit. Trained by his owner Allison Ernst, Sly will now serve alongside the officers who rescued him, enhancing community engagement and patrol coverage during busy seasons—all at no cost to the department. He is set to be publicly introduced at High Rock Park, symbolizing a remarkable transition from rescue to public service.
