Rescue of Underweight Seal Pup Named Wide Awake in Guernsey

A seal pup named Wide Awake was found to be severely underweight and in poor condition in Guernsey. Despite being dehydrated and exhausted, the pup showed aggression towards rescuers, which was seen as a positive sign by Geoff George, head of marine mammals at the GSPCA. Wide Awake will join three other rescued pups, Dark Horse, Swish, and Fireworks, who also require around-the-clock care.

The GSPCA is providing 24-hour care for the four seal pups, who will be moved to temporary accommodation while a new facility is being prepared to house them. Geoff George emphasized the importance of their care, stating that without the GSPCA, the pups would not have survived. Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager, expressed relief that all four pups are doing well despite their initial poor condition when rescued.

The GSPCA is working to provide the best possible care for the seal pups, who will soon have a new facility to support their rehabilitation. The rescue and care of these pups highlight the dedication of the GSPCA team in ensuring the well-being of marine mammals in need.
