Renegade, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., won the 46th Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by 3 3/4 lengths, earning 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and his first official career victory. The 6-5 favorite, trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Mike Repole, completed the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:43.54 on a fast track, overcoming early traffic by making a strong wide move in the stretch. This win raised Renegade’s career earnings to $199,000 and marked a promising start to his 3-year-old season.
Ortiz executed a strategic ride, keeping Renegade near the back before unleashing a powerful finish, while long shot Wayne’s Law briefly led the race before being overtaken. Owner Repole and trainer Pletcher expressed optimism about Renegade’s future, noting the horse’s potential to improve with age and distance. The Puma and Game for It finished third and fourth, respectively, rounding out the competitive field.
