Laura Graves’ Dutch Warmblood gelding Verdades, affectionately known as “Diddy,” passed away at age 23. Despite a rocky start—arriving in the U.S. as a wild, unhandled foal who was initially sick and difficult to train—Verdades developed into a top dressage competitor under Laura’s dedicated care. Their journey from training level struggles to international success culminated in Verdades being named the 2014 Chronicle dressage Horse of the Year and finishing as the top U.S. horse at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France.
Laura’s long-term commitment and partnership with Verdades, supported by top coaches like Debbie McDonald, transformed his natural talent and sensitive temperament into world-class Grand Prix performances. Their achievements were marked by steady progress, culminating in high-profile international recognition and offers of large sums for the horse—offers Laura never considered, valuing their unique bond above all. Verdades’ legacy is one of perseverance, trust, and exceptional ability, leaving a lasting impact on U.S. dressage.
