Remembering Skip Joseph: Montana Rodeo Champion and Beloved Horse Trainer

Alan Dennis “Skip” Joseph (1945–2023) was a renowned Montana cowboy, rodeo champion, and horse trainer. Beginning work at age 10 herding cattle, Skip excelled in rodeo, winning the 1963 National High School Bareback Riding Championship and multiple Montana rodeo Association titles. After retiring from rodeo in 1973, he dedicated over two decades to training horses, shoeing, judging, and firefighting, becoming a top reining horse trainer and co-founding the Montana Reining Horse Association. He was also a committed 4-H leader for 25 years, passionately promoting horsemanship and mentoring aspiring riders.

Skip’s family was central to his life; he shared a close bond with his children, Shane and Nikole, often roping and competing alongside them, and was a devoted grandfather to his granddaughter Breklyne. Married to Jean Guile for 46 years until her passing in 2017, Skip passed away on December 30, 2023. He is remembered fondly by family, friends, and the Montana equestrian community, with a celebration of life held in Great Falls, Montana.
